In this classic cartoon from 2000, Israel had pulled out of Lebanon in accordance with international assurances and UN resolutions but, gee, things weren't going according to schedule. We face an explosive situation today in 2006 which was created by the failure to get it right back in 2000. France now says that Israel should immediately withdraw to the international border and then there'd be a peace-keeping force that would prevent terror and missile attacks against Israel, help the Lebanese army take control of the border, and disarm Hezbollah. How to support Israel during this crisis

CrisisInIsrael.com  has an extensive list of agencies needing support to help house Israel families displaced by the war. It's worth perusing this site to see the range of assistance that Israelis are providing to each other through emergency housing, summer camp programs for displaced kids, donations of food, baby and kids clothing and toys, etc.

American Friends of Magen David Adom (Israeli Red Cross) has 750 ambulances on active duty to care for wounded people in northern Israel due to Hezbollah attacks. Magen David Adom emergency crews have been working double shifts in the north since the outbreak of hostilities. At the same time, calls to MDA have increased nationwide. Magen David Adom is bearing a large burden as many of its personnel are reservists who have been called to duty.

Ulpan Akiva "Hatzafon Be Libenu" ("the north is in our hearts") Campaign is currently housing many Israeli families displaced by Hezbollah attacks in the north, and is seeking financial support to help house and feed these families. To donate: send checks to: Ulpan Akiva Netanya

New Israel Fund was recently featured in our Networking Central column. They provide emergency assistance to Israel 's northern residents, especially minorities, new immigrants and other disadvantaged groups. Some examples include:

• NIF grantee Israel Association for Immigrant Children has opened a hotline in six languages which received nearly 2,000 calls during the first two weeks of the fighting. The Association matched callers from northern villages, towns and cities with Israelis in the center and south of the country who were willing to take in "refugees." The hotline also provided emotional support and information about residents' rights as to work and property damage from missiles.
• Veteran NIF grantee Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) of the Movement for Progressive Judaism in Israel (Reform) has opened a guest house at Kfar Silver near Ashkelon for 200 northern residents fleeing the fighting, and has arranged home hospitality for an additional 50 Israelis from the north. IRAC has provided food packages and emotional and spiritual support for dozens of families who remain in the north.
• Immigrants for a Successful Absorption has received emergency support to run a summer camp in the Negev for 20 new immigrant children from the North.
• Supporting Community: Women's Business Development Center has been given emergency support by NIF to assist small businesses in the north affected by the situation.
• NIF grantee Sot El-Amel Laborer's Voice has opened a hotline for Arab Israelis living in the north to help them with problems relating to their economic and employment rights in the current crisis.

The Friends of the Israeli Defense Force initiates and helps support social, educational, cultural and recreational programs and facilities for the young men and women soldiers of Israel who defend the Jewish homeland. FIDF also provides support for widows and orphans of fallen soldiers.

Concern for Helping Animals in Israel (CHAI) just brought 4 tons of food and hundreds of plastic water containers to the northern Israeli settlement of Nes Amim, near Nahariya, where volunteers immediately began the process of distributing it to abandoned animals in need throughout the region.
