NEWTOWN, Pa., Aug. 18, 2005 – The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia – Bucks County Region announced today the debut of its Bucks County Senior Council’s Fall 2005 Lecture Series featuring "Repairing the World (Tikkun Olam)," presented by Betsy Sheerr, chair of the Non-Sectarian Aid Division of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and a vice chair of Federation.
As
chair of JDC’s Non-Sectarian Aid Division, Sheerr oversees humanitarian aid to
non-Jewish peoples in countries experiencing crises, such as natural disasters,
war and famine. Her presentation describes Jewish relief efforts and aid in
response to the millions of people affected by the December tsunami and includes

The concept of tikkun olam (repairing the world) is deeply rooted in Jewish culture and tradition and is a cornerstone principle of Jewish community, service and relief organizations. It has come to signify the Jewish obligation for caring social action and the pursuit of social justice.
JDC is a community partner of Federation.
Established
in 1901, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia is the central non-profit
Jewish community organization in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Congregation Leyv Ha-ir will hold a Kabbalat Shabbat at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, at Sterling Glen, 150 N. 20th St., in center city Philadelphia. The Shabbat will be led by Rabbi Julie Greenberg and Cantor Beatrice Beer. Ken Ulansey and his Klezmer Band will perform.

An open house at Temple B'nai Abraham, an all-inclusive Reconstructionist
synagogue in Bordentown, N.J., will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night, Sept.

Teens who enjoy playing competitive basketball have the opportunity to try the JCC's Kaiserman Branch Fall Teen Basketball League.
Teens can sign up for the Kaiserman's 7th and 8th grade, 9th and 10th grade or 11th and 12th grade league. Player draft begins Sunday, Sept. 18, and the leagues begin Sunday, Sept. 25. Teens can bring their own team to the 11th and 12th grade league.

Jewish Children’s Folkshul is a cultural Jewish school for children in grades Pre-K through nine, providing a secular, humanist approach to the exploration of Jewish cultural identity, holidays and history. For over 30 years, Folkshul has served communities in the greater Philadelphia area including families from Montgomery, Bucks and Delaware Counties.

A mayoral debate in Lancaster will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, in the Refractory of the Lancaster Theological Seminary, 555 W. James St. Both Democratic challenger Richard Gray and the incumbent, Republican Mayor Charlie Smithgall, have been invited.
The debate is sponsored by the Lancaster County Coalition for Religious and Social Justice. Members of the coalition include Congregation Shaarai Shomayim, the Jewish Community Alliance of Lancaster and other synagogues.
